What is BMI?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple screening tool that uses your height and weight to estimate if you're at a healthy weight. It's calculated using the formula: BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)²
BMI helps categorize weight status as underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese, providing a quick health assessment.
BMI Categories
Underweight
BMI below 18.5
Normal Weight
BMI 18.5 - 24.9
Overweight
BMI 25 - 29.9
Obese
BMI 30 and above
BMI Limitations
While BMI is a useful screening tool, it has limitations:
- Doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat mass
- May not be accurate for athletes or very muscular individuals
- Doesn't account for age, gender, or ethnicity differences
- Should be used alongside other health assessments
